چکیده

Objective: To review the evidence as to whether continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) reduces postoperative pulmonary complications compared with standard care in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. Data sources: OVID version of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, searched to November 2005. This search was supplemented by mail and phone follow up of authors to retrieve mortality data. Study selection: Randomised controlled trials involving adults who underwent elective major abdominal surgery other than abdominal aortic aneurism repair in which CPAP plus standard care (physiotherapy and oxygen therapy) was compared to standard care only. Outcome measures were postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs), pneumonia, atelectasis, endotracheal intubation, and mortality. Data extraction: Two reviewers extracted data and discrepancies were resolved by consensus. Methodological quality was assessed using a scoring system between 0 and 11 where randomisation, concealment, blinding, patient selection, Continuous positive airway pressure reduces respiratory complications following abdominal surgery

Comparison of the Effects of Prone and Supine Positions on Abdominal Distention in the Premature Infants Receiving Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (NCPAP)

Background: Premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) are in dire need of respiratory support with a ventilator. However, the high tidal volume of mechanical ventilation may cause lung injury, and researchers have been concerned with the use of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP). NCPAP has concomitant side effects, such as abdominal distention, which might disrup...

Continuous positive airway pressure via the Boussignac system immediately after extubation improves lung function in morbidly obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND Morbidly obese patients are at elevated risk of perioperative pulmonary complications, including airway obstruction and atelectasis. Continuous positive airway pressure may improve postoperative lung mechanics and reduce postoperative complications in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. METHODS Forty morbidly obese patients with known obstructive sleep apnea undergoing laproscop...

A Comparative Study of Treatment Response of Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Preterm Infants: Early Nasal Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation versus Early Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure

Background Infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) is one of the main causes of serious complications and death in preterm infants. Both Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (NCPAP) and Nasal Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) are known as the most common treatment strategies for IRDS. The present study intended to compare NCPAP and NIPPV in the treatment of preterm inf...

[Acute respiratory failure immediately following surgery for morbid obesity].

Patients with sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome have a higher probability of presenting more postoperative complications, yet early treatment with continuous positive airway pressure can prevent them. We report the case of a patient who underwent surgery for morbid obesity and who developed acute respiratory failure in the immediate postoperative period, requiring readmission to the recovery unit. ...

Continuous positive airway pressure for treatment of respiratory complications after abdominal surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE We evaluated the potential benefit of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to prevent postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs), atelectasis, pneumonia, and intubation in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA PPCs are common during the postoperative period and may be associated with a high morbidity rate. Efficacy of CPAP to prevent PPCs occur...
